New AHA Resource on SDOH

The American Hospital Association has published a new resource on using the ICD-10 Z-codes for capturing non-medical factors influencing patients’ health. The tool includes both answers to some frequently asked questions and links to a series of reports and issue briefs on identifying and addressing health-related social needs.

In the fall, the code set expanded to include more details on food insecurity’s impact on health, as reviewed in this September update (which also explains what an ICD-10 code is).

Two additional resources for getting into the details of SDOH coding and its potential impact on improving ‘whole person’ care are the SIREN Coffee & Science podcast series (which wrapped up last month) and The Gravity Project.
